Day 7

“Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things- air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky- all things tending toward the eternal, or what we imagine of it.” - Cesare Pavese

Today was a great example of Murphy’s law...

We started off great- on the road at 7am, didn’t leave anything behind (that we have figured out yet), and able to fill up on gas and go.

We stopped in Raleigh, NC to see the capital building.

That’s about all that went great.
Today was an exercise in patience. Tempers were up. My vertigo apparently did NOT go away, but it only impacted me when I was walking, so I could at least drive. I had to pull over to nap. Kids were snippy and tired, and I was not much better. We got into Outer Banks late, but found a restaurant from ‘Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives’: Black Pelican. I assure you it was not priced like a diner, drive-in, and definitely not a dive.

But the Chesapeake Bay pizza that Charlie and I shared was really good: white sauce, lump meat crab, corn, bacon, and Old Bay seasoning, Hayden’s pizza also looked great- all meat, and Miles stuck with pepperoni, but he did try ours, which is more than I expected!

And it was all downhill from there...
Miles had to go to the bathroom, Gas station #1: bathroom was out of order. Gas station #2: toilets didn’t flush. Gas station #3: bathrooms were closed and blocked off. He was dying at this point. I pulled into a Subway where he was FINALLY able to go. Can’t make this up.

So by the time we arrived at the place we would camp for the night, it was dark. And windy. Like a storm might come through (with some lightning in the background for emphasis on this). Also we didn’t have a reservation. So I tried to quickly set up in the dark- never good. And we quickly learned that there were no stakes in with the tent. Yep. No stakes and wind and possibly a storm. Add in quick tempers. Add in we can’t have a fire in the beach, which we were all looking forward to.

Some (hopefully) useful improv later, the tent was set up. I found some extra stakes in a bin. And I hope it doesn’t try and fly away in the night. And it looks like the storm may miss us. And tempers are cooling, so hopefully we can ALL breathe a little easier tomorrow and enjoy some time on the beach 🏖

Recap:
613 Miles
$162
1 Capital Building: Raleigh, NC

Today’s lessons:
1: Subway will let you use the bathroom without a purchase if you run out of there fast enough.
2: Check the tent bag before you leave to make sure you have everything.
3: We are in need of more ice cream on this trip to keep the peace. Like daily ice cream.

Today’s Song: “Brandy” - Looking Glass

Tomorrow we are going to try eggs for breakfast, then head to the beach for some swimming. Hopefully the weather holds out on us tonight, although with this tent shaking, I’m not sure how much I’ll sleep lol... Maybe we will check out the lost colony lore on Roanoke tomorrow as well!
