Day 12

Overslept hahaha! But only by a few minutes.
We were on the road by 7am, not too bad. Breakfast at the hotel was the best it's been on the trip, and they actually had good creamer for coffee, so I had no issues with sleepiness on the drive.

We found this amazing donut shop in Portland:

Selections included a maple bacon donut (mmm bacon) and a sweet potato ginger donut!!??

We then headed to Augusta to see the capital:

At this point I had a plan A-F working to see where we would camp tonight. My first choice was Bar Harbor campground very close to Acadia (Acadia was booked). But Bar Harbor did not take reservations, only first-come, first- serve. I did not know if that would work out to our benefit at all as we wouldn't arrive there until 1p.

So we really weren't sure what the day would turn out to be.

But...
We finally had something work in our favor! Bar Harbor still had sites available, and they are reasonably priced! It had also slowed on rain, but we didn't want to set up yet, so we went into town to grab some lunch.


(Miles had actually tried to be healthy and order a salad, but still ended up with fries!)

We then decided to head to Acadia to get our park pass and check out what trails we wanted to hit tomorrow. And then we thought we'd do the park loop, just to see what was there. We were not disappointed.











I cannot wait to explore more of this park! The very friendly ranger was so helpful in pointing out spots for us to hit tomorrow. No fire tonight - too much rain. We barely got the fly on in time before it poured, but still had to deal with set-up in the rain.

Today's Lessons:
1. Behold: the only gas station in Maine with a public bathroom! 
2. Doesn't matter how cold the water is, the kids want to go in the ocean.
3. Acadia is now my #2 favorite park (Glacier still has it beat, I think). I'll decide for sure tomorrow after some more exploration!
4. Put up the tent when you have the chance, or rain, rain, everywhere! (It will be a damp night)

Today's Song: "Tangerine" - Led Zeppelin Probably my favorite Zeppelin, and always reminds me of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" - also my favorite (Charlie Kaufman is an amazing screenwriter). 

Looking forward to staying in one spot for more than one night and exploring tomorrow!

“If we were meant to stay in one place, we’d have roots instead of feet.” Nobody wanted to wake up this morning, myself included. And after seeing the free breakfast options, we may as well have just slept through it. Day 14 and Final Day

Day 14: "Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving." - Terry Pratchett Let the train wreck continue...lol We got up and packed, as quiet as they have ever been, and we hit the road by 8am. We were slated to arrive at Niagara at 6p. And then 6p became 8p. And then 8p became 10p. And at which point I said forget it, we are headed home. Traffic continuously pushed our time back, and I was completely over paying tolls that are outrageously priced. And by the late afternoon, I think we all agreed that we would rather do Niagara right then try and fit it in, at night. Lots of lessons on this trip! We stopped at Albany, NY, and I feel that Albany really, and very accurately, summarized our trip. This was one of the weirdest, most random cities I have ever been in. There was just about every type of architecture in this city - and it felt like a forced mash-up smorgasbord of crazy. So yes, accurately describing our trip haha! (Albany, NY) ...

Day 9

We woke up - all of us exhausted, I think, and walked to the beach. The kids said they didn't want to swim today, but then ran right to the water when they saw the waves. We were able to watch some boarders, which was really cool. Also, the beach is always cool in the morning. Beach #2: Delaware Seashore State Park:   We repacked the entire car so there was some space, and headed out to D.C. via capital buildings. (Dover, DE) (Annapolis, MD) Annapolis looked like a very cool, very expensive town. I saw a yacht docked at someone's summer house!
