Day 13

"And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul." - John Muir

We had a very full, very rewarding day.

We did not wake up early, and actually everyone slept in. Not bad for tenting it. And it was a lot chillier than it has been anywhere else. We headed to Acadia when we were ready, and decided to start with the lighthouse. Lots of wandering off the path today...

Charlie insisted she saw a seal, but I couldn't look because I was being attacked by a bee and running around the rocks. She also said it may have been a dolphin. Wish I would have seen it!

We then went "tide-pooling", which is basically just water wading looking for cool sea creatures. We were not disappointed!

We then headed back to the Park Loop to hit Thunder Hole and possibly hike. The kids immediately jumped the rail and started playing on the rocks - pushing their limits (and mine) as much as possible.

I then made a deal with the kids that instead of a hike (which they didn't really want to do) we would head out to another island and check out the other part of the park. Worth it.

We headed back, the twins took a dip in the pool (which we happened to have a site right next to), while Hayden and I made dinner and started packing up so we can hit the road right away tomorrow.

Hayden had the genius idea to find a place to check out the stars as it was (finally) a clear night. So we headed back to the park to go to Sand Beach. Full view of the Milky Way and several shooting stars, which apparently Charlie had never seen before. The beach was relatively people-free, and after looking up at the surreal sky, it didn't matter - everything seemed small compared to the sky. Sometimes it's great to get the reminder that we are so infinitesimal in this world. Perspective.

We got back to our site rather late, and everyone was ready for bed.

Recap:
165 miles
$46

Today's Lessons:
1. Capital One will let you get a pin number for cash on the same day requested.
2. Walmart will not let you write yourself a money order unless you know your pin for your debit card.
3. Guess whose campsite had to be paid for in cash and no cards were working?
4. We really, really like National Parks. Today was by far the best day of our Tour de East Trainwreck. And Acadia is definitely my #2.

Tomorrow we start the long trek home - with a brief stop at Niagara Falls, as it's on our way. The kids are in a rush to return to their activities. I am less in a rush for reality.
